Yellow, a breath of fresh air5/5/2015
I am not a Royalist or partial to princesses (the new people’s princess – really?) but congratulations to Kate for making the nation sunny on a overcast Bank Holiday weekend. Yellow was a perfect colour choice for her Brit-designed buttercup print dress. Thank goodness mother and child were not clad in pink.
Yellow is the colour of happiness. Yellow is Elle Decoration’s this month’s hot colour. Yellow it seems is having a moment and has also been brightening up interiors of late. Ochre prize a subtle glamour and their fine Italian Saddle leather is hand dyed in unique shades with evocative names. The newish Sable leather chair is now available in a beautiful ripe Quince. This intense yellow is a chic accent colour that partners well with moody greys and inky blues. Dealer-decorator-maker Max Rollitt’s bespoke Katzic is upholstered in yellow hand-dyed antique hemp. Here is a classically inspired craftsman and sought-after interior designer whose aim is to create joyful homes. His Katzic sofa is pure joy and looks thoroughly modern in yellow but it is actually based on a sofa dated 1790 that Max bought in a Manor House in Lancashire. Architectural designer Ben Pentreath has one in this primrose-yellow antique linen in the Drawing Room in his Dorset Parsonage, which also features on the front cover of his book ‘English Decoration.’ Max has also painted a Hampshire kitchen in a bright intense yellow.
Margo Selby’s hand woven artworks feature cadmium yellow with milky whites, cloudy greys and near primaries. Each artwork explores how colour and structure unite, how yarn can be blended, revealed and concealed in a textile to create abstract colour studies.
A selection of Margo's latest hand-woven lampas fabrics will be on display as part of the Made in Clerkenwell Open Studios, which start this week. Margo will also be providing a demonstration of hand weaving on Sunday 10th May as part of a programme of interactive talks and demonstrations that promote the first year of London Craft Week designed to promote highly skilled craftsmanship.
