FLOOR COUTURE

1/3/2016

FRONT’s second London showroom opens at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour (DCCH) this week. Describing itself as the ‘world’s premier destination for design excellence,’ this dome is home to quite a few luxury interior brands.

One such brand is FRONT that now brings its revolutionary rugs to what is otherwise a quite conservative space.  This floor art is by international designers Jan Kath, Michaela Schleypen and here for the first time in Europe the work of Zoë Luyendijk.

Jan Kath is one of the most awarded rug designers in the world with global recognition for ERASED HERITAGE. In this collection of Nepalese knotted rugs, traditional Oriental rug designs have the ‘distressed’ patina of age woven within them – a technique developed by Kath and one that has become his signature.

Michaela Schleypen is an innovator and first to start modern rug sculpting. Her rugs are handmade using a dense tufting process in silk and wool, into which she incorporates unexpected materials including lustre cottons, neon and denim threads as well as moisture-resistant fibres. Her unique colour scale brings fine gradient variations within her designs. It’s this rare mix of the prescribed and the unpredictable that makes her work highly sought after.

Zoë Luyendijk is a master of pattern who creates the most intricate rug patterns in the world today. No one has achieved this level of detail before.

Her rugs are for those who appreciate the fine tradition of carpet making but are open to a new experience. She recreates the beauty of nature in an artistic modern carpet. Several layers and many shades are used to create her defined pattern and signature watercolour effects.  All rugs are hand knotted in Nepal using natural materials – 100% Tibetan wool, refined and raw silk, natural and bleached hemp.
